Milan’s food tour!
Milan’s food scene is so diverse that one article can’t possibly capture it all. For this reason, we’ve chosen to share our top picks by categories. In this article, we’ll explore Hygges Travel recommended spots where you can savor iconic Italian dishes and some of our favorite international servings.
What food is Milan known for?
During my first months living in Italy, I had the opportunity to dine at a Cascina (Farmstead) in the Parco Agricolo Sud Milano. There, we were treated to Risotto Alla Milanese accompanied with freshly baked bread and Parmigiano cheese. Let me tell you, it was love at first taste. In brief, its golden color, creamy texture, and yummy saffron taste were just perfectly balanced. Within the metropolitan area of Milan, I’ve heard that Osteria Conchetta is the go-to place for some of the finest risotto in town, and of course other delicious Milanese specialties.

Milan’s food spots, our curated list.
When it comes to food, we believe every plate has its own story. Therefore, the list we are sharing in this article today is the sum of our personal experiences, local recommendations and spots we stumbled upon with friends. Ready your appetite, because it’s finally time to eat!
First things first: Pizza.
The word “pizza” comes from the Latin word “pinsere,” which means to pound or stamp. According to other sources, it might be linked to Lombardic words like “bizzo” or “pizzo,” meaning a mouthful, very similar to the English word “bite.” Latin or not, for us Pizza simply means ‘amore’ in a plate.
Living in Milan, I was surprised by the amount of Pizzerias around the city. There was at least one on every street, if not more (after all, it is Italy we are talking about). However, in this article, we’ve decided to include only our top three recommendations. Of course, there are other spots worth a detour, but we believe these three are the must-try when in town.
1. Pizzeria Assaje.
Pizzeria Assaje is a Neapolitan-style pizza restaurant with multiple locations spread throughout the metropolitan area of Milan. Their pizzas, particularly the Neapolitan style, are exceptionally delicious. In addition to the traditional options, their menu features gourmet pizzas with unique toppings, including a ricotta crust for added flavor and distinction. Interestingly, each of their establishments is equipped with a proofing chamber, allowing their dough to ferment using the Biga method for a minimum of 30 hours.
With reasonable prices and great quality, it’s our top choice for savoring a tasty bite in Milan. Furthermore, “Assaje” is a Neapolitan dialect term that conveys extreme satisfaction or delight, which undoubtedly adds a cultural plus to the restaurant’s appeal. Definitely a must-try!

Located in the bustling heart of Milan, Piz is a Pizzeria with over ten years of expertise in creating authentic Italian pizzas. Their menu offers only three classic and budget-friendly pizza choices, each featuring a thin crispy crust. As an added bonus, the place has a very cozy and friendly atmosphere. When wandering around Duomo, make sure to book a table and treat yourself to one of the finest Italian pizzas you’ll ever have.

3. Nietta Pizzeria Friggitoria Jamm Ja.
Jamm Ja – Pizze e Fritti is a popular hangout among Milan locals. Located near the city center, this Napolitan corner is renowned for its flavourful, fresh, and top-quality food! Their pizza crusts and toppings are their standout features. While they do serve traditional Neapolitan pizzas like Marinara and Margherita, they also offer unique creations inspired by classics, boasting exciting flavors bound to impress any passer-by.
Make sure to visit this spot when in Milan – Just because you’re in the north doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the vibrant atmosphere reminiscent of the south.

Milan's food | Pizzeria Bonus: Rossopomodoro.
Rossopomodoro is the largest chain of Napolitan pizzerias in the world. With its hallmark motto “Come un giorno a Napoli,” Rossopomodoro brings the warmth and hospitality of Naples in each dining experience.
Since Rossopomodoro is present in major Italian cities, tourist destinations, airports, shopping centers, and more, I had some reservations about trying it out. However, I was encouraged to dine there by my Neapolitan friend, who vouched for its ability to capture the true essence of Naples’ flavours. I had to include it in my list of recommendations, since their Pizza Classiche 5 formaggi was so good, it completely won me over.

The other Italian favorite: Pasta.
Just like pizza, Italian pasta is a gastronomic treasure you wouldn’t want to overlook when exploring Milan’s food scene. Pasta is like a love letter from Italy. A warm hug on a plate effortlessly tempting all taste buds, mine included. Throughout my time in Milan, my Italian roommate delighted me with pasta dishes made from her grandmother’s recipes. So, when I tell you that I hold pasta in high regard, I mean it.
In Milan, many restaurants specialize in Pasta. However, in this article, I will tell you about two addresses you should definitely try when in town.
1. Miscusi.
Miscusi is probably one of the few Italian restaurant specializing in customizable fresh pasta. You read it right, this address is like a magic box where you can create your own pasta dish by choosing the shape, the sauce, and the toppings as well.
Even though it’s part of a chain, Miscusi serves up a wide range of delicious homemade pasta at prices that won’t break the bank. If you’re craving freshly made pasta in Milan, Miscusi has got you covered. I mean, they make their pasta from scratch, and their sauces are bursting with flavor— honestly, what more could you ask for?
Personal tip: If you’re having trouble deciding, go for the classics like mushrooms and Parmesan cream or tomato sauce, burrata, and pistachio pesto, the finest servings of the Italian cuisine.

2. Pasta d’Autore.
Another place to eat fresh pasta in Milan is Pasta d’Autore. Located a short distance from the Colonne di San Lorenzo and Via Torino, this place offers an authentic experience of what Italians would call “homemade pasta cooked by Nonna on Sundays.”
Each day, Pasta d’Autore crafts fresh pasta and all types of assortments of sauces. It’s like being your own chef, you get to choose your dish then mix and match the different types of pasta and sauces the way you want. Plus, with a different special sauce every day, there’s always something new to try.

First born in Polignano a Mare, in the heart of the province of Bari, Pescaria is the first seafood fast food in Italy. This place offers a fresh take on fast food by offering a diverse menu of sandwiches, salads, and other seafood-centric dishes.
What sets Pescaria apart is its seafood paninis. Fresh and of high quality, it merges the goodness of fish and the culinary creativity of their chef to serve one of the most delectable fish treats. Plus, the service is fast, which makes it perfect for a quick lunch or a casual dinner with friends.
Ps: The ambiance of their restaurants is warm, casual, and has a welcoming atmosphere. As for the interior design, it reflects the coastal location of the restaurant with elements evoking the sea and the fishing culture.

2. Light Sushi.
Light Sushi is my go-to spot for amazing sushi. If you have an interest in Japanese cuisine, you’ve got to check out this place.
I particularly like this restaurant because it combines Japanese sushi techniques with cooking styles from other culinary traditions. The balance of flavors, textures, and presentation makes Light Sushi a delicious interplay of tastes. Between the crunch of tempura flakes and the creaminess of mayonnaise-based sauces, Sushi Light masters the art of adding depth to each sushi bite. Somehow, they found the perfect balance to push the boundaries of tradition while delivering a colorful dining experience that could delight anyone’s senses.

Last but not least, Milan' food scene international bonus: Flower Burger.
Flower Burger is the first vegan burger in Milan. The concept is burgers whose fundamental characteristic is color; yellow bread made with turmeric, purple extracted from black carrot, and pink obtained from cherry extract. Basically, Flower Burger explores natural ingredients to innovate with colors and taste. With elements like bean sprouts, tofu, chickpeas, and quinoa, Flower Burger serves their burgers with sides like paprika-scented potatoes, edamame, or patatas buenas.
It is delicious and the burgers burst with flavors. One bite, that is all you need to get caught up.
